Salford Meadows bridge - Manchester, UK
The bridge as a tree
CLIENT: Salford City Council
VALUE: € 2,230,000.00
The concept of the bridge is to create a public infrastructure capable to provide the future development of the Salford area. The footbridge itself will be a space for pedestrian to pause and enjoy the views of the river and of the park. It will be the connection that brings the countryside aspects of the parkland into the urban environment of The Crescent and Salford itself.
To maximize the contribution of The Meadow site to the transformation profile of this part of Salford and set a benchmark for future development activity in the surrounding area, we propose an image, a concept that could
be also used in the future as a guide line: the tree. As a tree, the footbridge consist in the roots, the trunk and the branches. The park represents the foliage where the footpaths, as branches spread from the footbridge into The Meadow. It ends with its roots on The Crescent in a wide entrance platform that highlights the footbridge's location and increases its prominence where the footbridge clasp to the road. From here it can develop again inside the city towards the War Memorial and Chapel Street.
