Bremerhaven maritime museum extension - Bremerhaven, Germany
CLIENT: Maritime Museum of Bremerhaven
VALUE: € 18,000,000.00
The design for the extension of the Schiffahrtsmuseum, realized by Hans Scharoun in 1969, aims to adapt the museum to the new cultural and scientific program.
The new project creates a whole system with the existing one,
assigning to the extension a character that evokes the "mechanical" value of the port equipment.
The tower, containing both deposits and research spaces, represents the new visual fulcrum, a new sign in the urban and marine landscape.
Its structure is constituted by overlapping colored volumes, conceived as resin containers, wrapped in a membrane of wire netting.
The tower dominates a platform containing a public hall, as well as a temporary exhibitions space. The platform structure is constituted by reinforced and translucent fiberglass sheets.
