PERIOD: 2008 - 2009
CLIENT: Fondation Immeubles Organisations Internationales
The project of the extension of the centre William Rappard provides clear solutions to the requirements asked by the brief.
From an architectural point of view the project is the sum of two well-defined architectural elements.
The first element is the main volume, parallel to the existing building, which contains most of the functions required by the project. A clear, simple and compact volume with a glass facade. The effect of reflection and transparency is increased by large trees surrounding the garden. The second architectural element consists of three irregular shaped volumes connecting the new main volume with the existing building and penetrating the two buildings.
These volumes, which are architectural elements, host connections and common functions to both the new building and the existing one and create spaces of varying heights with a beautiful atmosphere.
The volespite the large size due to the high demand of workspaces, is dematerialized through the glass facade effects.
Volumes are also read on the main longitudinal elevation front and provide a visual connection between the existing building and the surrounding garden.
From a functional point of view the project responds effectively to all the requirement of the brief. The building plans in their simplicity provide maximum flexibility and optimization of each work area as well the optimization of the plant. All the work area are positioned directly to the outside, while interior areas define a core of services that include stairs, toilets, plant and elevators.
The structure is designed as a modular grid which ensures maximum flexibility of space.
These solution, togheter with the cooling and heating system describer in the following chapter, will guarantee the highest and better comfort for the workplaces.
The building consists of nine levels divided by:
Two underground floors host car parks and areas for mechanical installation. The basement host a loading and unloading area, the food preparation and the archives. In addition there are six above the ground floors ehich host offices, the main hall which is also connected to the existing library and the cafeteria and restaurant with outdoor terrace.
The pedestrian and car access are well defined in order to garantee the maximum of efficiency.
