Design Stories: Porta Susa Station and Line Quadrupling, Turin

Our Design Stories series continues with the railway line quadrupling between Turin’s Porta Susa and Stura stations, part of a wider programme of infrastructural expansion and urban regeneration.

The project included a new underground railway line and the redevelopment of the urban connection between Porta Susa Station and Corso Grosseto, for a total of 7.8 km of double-track railway tunnel.

One of the main challenges was integrating the new infrastructure into a dense urban context, characterised by the presence of heritage buildings close to the planned tunnels. The crossing of the Dora River required the construction of an almost 3 km artificial underpass and the reconstruction of the riverbed.

The intervention also included the expansion of Porta Susa Station, approximately 600 metres long, with two underground levels, four platforms and six tracks, as well as the new Rebaudengo Station, approximately 250 metres long, with three underground levels and four tracks, built using the cut-and-cover method.

A complex underground infrastructure project that combined railway expansion with the transformation of Turin’s urban fabric.
