Design Stories: ITER Cadarache Centre

Design Stories: ITER Cadarache Centre

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER Organization) in Cadarache, France, is the world’s most ambitious experimental project. It represents an epochal challenge to provide a concrete response to the energy crisis by demonstrating the feasibility of controlled nuclear fusion. Aiming for a steady-state operation of 500 MW, ITER marks a revolutionary break from traditional nuclear power, focusing on clean energy with minimal waste.

Our firm is proud to have supported the Fusion for Energy – European JV Undertaking for ITER through the feasibility study, detailed design, and works supervision phases.
The project centres on the “Tokamak Building,” a monumental machine-building hybrid of over ten million components. As the largest Tokamak ever built, it uses magnetic fields to control the fusion reaction. Contributing to the design and realisation of such a complex infrastructure allows us to help engineer the next frontier of sustainable electricity.
