Competition for Hospital in Ragusa

We are very proud to be part of the design team with Ottaviani Associati in the design competition for the completion of Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in #Ragusa. The project was selected among the finalists of the competition.

The project involves the extension of the existing hospital with a new contemporary building which dialogue with the existing one. On the West side the ribbon windows of solar shading mark the façade; on the East elevation, which faces the existing building, the façade has a more classical feature, marked by solids and voids.

The project proposal is divided into two many elements: the agorà, as a hinge between the two structures, a place of welcome and orientation, meeting and relaxation, and the new building, a scenic backdrop where the health functions are located. The square becomes the beating heart of hospital life and represents a connecting element between the existing and the new building. Its transparent photovoltaic glass cover lets natural light filter through a screening system made up of triangular metal panels, whose overall design refers to the shapes of a large origami.
