A New Pedestrian Gateway to the Sea: The Ognina Station Bridge

A New Pedestrian Gateway to the Sea: The Ognina Station Bridge

The Ognina Station Bridge in Catania is designed to enhance urban connectivity and promote sustainable mobility. It forms a continuous link between the city and the sea, reconnecting the urban fabric with the waterfront and enriching the surrounding landscape.

The project comprises a 168-meter-long elevated walkway, articulated into five spans of varying lengths, engineered for harmonious integration with the existing environment and full compliance with functional and regulatory requirements. Pier locations were carefully optimised to avoid conflicts with subgrade structures and the road network, ensuring optimal structural performance.

𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

• Structural Design: The 3-meter-wide walkway features a rectilinear geometry in the initial and final sections, while the central spans follow a dynamic 95-meter radius curve.

• Cantilevered Engineering: The final 15-meter span is fully cantilevered, creating an effect of structural lightness and providing a panoramic viewpoint over the Mediterranean. Suspended from this section is a metal staircase consisting of three flights.

• Architectural Permeability: The bridge features an extruded polygonal section and flared parapets finished with a lightweight mesh. This design ensures maximum visual permeability, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape.

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁:

By strengthening the link between the city and the sea, the project promotes sustainable mobility, encourages the use of railway services, and contributes to enhancing the coastal landscape. It acts as a strategic interface between infrastructure and environment, reducing urban fragmentation, improving accessibility to the coast, and supporting a more resilient and environmentally conscious model of urban growth.
