Bringing Rome closer to the Tiber

Bringing Rome closer to the Tiber

The renewal of the riverfront at Ponte Sisto and Ponte Sant’Angelo is entering its final phase, marking another important step in the transformation of one of Rome’s most iconic public spaces.

Part of the wider “Tevere e Vie d’Acqua” programme delivered as part of Rome’s Jubilee interventions, the project contributes to the regeneration of approximately 7 km of riverfront and more than 90,000 sqm of historic embankment walls, enhancing accessibility, safety and the quality of public space along the Tiber.

At Ponte Sisto and Ponte Sant’Angelo, the interventions combine structural engineering, hydraulic improvements and the creation of new pedestrian areas, carefully integrated within a unique historical and architectural setting. The works strengthen the connection between the city and its river while preserving the identity of two of Rome’s most recognisable landmarks.

As the project moves towards completion, it reflects a broader vision for the Tiber: restoring its role as a central public space, reconnecting the city with its river and creating a more continuous and welcoming waterfront for residents, pilgrims and visitors alike.
