Design Competition “Taranto Olympic Swimming Stadium”

Design Competition “Taranto Olympic Swimming Stadium”

Our project proposal for the 2nd phase of “Taranto Olympic Swimming Stadium Design Competition for the XX Mediterranean Games ‐ Taranto 2026”, an International Design Competition for the realization of the Olympic swimming pool in Taranto during the XX Mediterranean Games, achieved in collaboration with Hassel Studio who took care of the architectural design.
The main conceptual approach for the design of the new Swimming Stadium concerns the restoration of both urban and landscape context, aimed at generating continuity between the city and the waterfront. A system of stairs, ramps and terraces envelops the two Olympic swimming pools, incorporating them within the topography, creating at the same time the audience stalls and a public and informal Amphitheatre, inspired by the Magna Graecia ones, famous for facing the seaside and the city.

The project is configured as a landscape intervention characterized by a ‘minimal façade shell’ necessary to create the microclimate for the indoor pool areas; while the stairs, ramps and terraces provide a spatial conformation where people are free to move around and which connects the city to the Archaeological Park and finally to the waterfront.
